The Cold War was one of the most prominent battles in the History of mankind. It was fought on the basis of “The Domino Effect”. It stated that the cumulative effect produced when one event sets off a chain of similar events. The domino effect states that when you make a change to one behavior it will activate a chain reaction and cause a shift in related behaviors as well.
Similarly, people believed that a communist government in one nation would quickly lead to communist takeovers in neighboring states, each falling like a perfectly aligned row of dominos.
This practice can be applied to your organization as well.
The cycle time between Purchase Order and Dispatch is a lot and sundry processes occur during this time. Many of these processes are interdependent and stoppage of one small process can hamper the development of several other processes which ultimately increases the non-value-added time.
In big industries, a small bottleneck can lead to mayhem and chaos if it is unattended. Hence your tasks should be lined up like a row of dominos. Completion of one process should automatically start the next one.
If all the processes are in sync, then our predictability can increase, and the processes can run smoothly with minimum lag.
